Camber Sands is a beautiful beach all year round, and whilst many locals and holiday makers love spending their summers at the stunning sandy beach, it has attracted further fame for its appearances in many movie scenes. Dating back to 1958, Dunkirk was a stand-in for the location of Operation Dynamo, as it was, of course, carried out on the beaches of Northern France. This was largely the beginning of war films featuring Camber Sands, showing its resemblance of historic beaches – particularly ones in France.
A more recent war film, The Monuments Men, released in 2014, was also filmed on the iconic shores of Camber Sands. This story of allied heroes’ features George Clooney and Matt Damon, and some scenes were also filmed in the neighbouring town of Rye. Also written, directed and co-produced by Clooney, the film saw Camber Sands taken back to World War 2, and the cast were frequently spotted in military costume whilst filming scenes on the beach for the epic. The star-studded film also featured Hugh Bonneville and Bill Murray.
Another star-studded film that filmed at Camber Sands is Criminal, released in 2016. This action thriller sees a CIA agent searching for a hacker in London. After a serious of events, his memories are transferred into a criminal to try and help track down the hacker. Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman and Gal Gadot star in this sci-fi that also stars Camber Sands. A montage of the long stretch of sandy shores is used for none other than the film’s final scene, and sees magnificent aerial shots used to show Camber Sands in all its beauty.
One film that reached an audience far and wide is The Theory of Everything, which also featured Camber Sands. The story of one of the most famous scientists of our time, Stephen Hawking and his wife, Jane Wilde is one that many will know, whether they have seen the film or not. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones star in this iconic film, that featured an important scene set at Camber Sands itself. In the biopic, Hawking goes to the beach with his family, which of course, is Camber Sands. Camber really plays an important part here, delivering an extraordinary sense of emotion through the family’s hardship.
Whilst After Life is not a film, this hit TV show also featured Camber Sands in a scene. Ricky Gervais stars as main character Tony, who is struggling with grief following the passing of his wife. Whilst trying to push away those who want to care for him, beach scenes become an occurrence for Gervais’ character Tony. This sandy beach with immense dunes is, of course, Camber Sands. After Life has currently two series, with a third expected next year.
